Mike Dezarn, patient:
When I was younger, in my teens, I started developing anxiety and depression to the point where I was actually suicidal. It probably stayed with me a good 15 years.

Jonathan Martin, MD, Behavioral Health:
There can be a lot of signs that people are considering suicide or having suicidal thoughts — if they’re feeling hopeless, if they’re feeling helpless, if they’re isolating from you. There can be a lot of different treatments for depression or suicidal ideation. Medication management is one of those — the classic would be antidepressants. That’s the first step. Then, you can also pursue non-pharmacologic options, which would be therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, or other therapy modalities.

Here at Baptist [Health] Corbin, we are privileged to be in a position where we can help patients who are suffering [from] these issues. We have good staff here at Baptist who are trained and passionate about this, and we have a great mental health facility. We can provide care in a lot of different capacities. It’s rewarding. Help is out there, and we’re going to give it.

Dezarn:
The crisis hotline is there for anyone. If you want to reach out and you don’t have anybody you can talk to, or you think you don’t have anybody you can talk to, you can call. They will listen and they will hear you. They will hear your voice. The key part of that is to listen. Sometimes that’s all it takes. (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800.273.8255.)
