Karina Busch, MD, Acute and Chronic Wound Care:
Wound care is very important in many regards. Most of our patients have a lot of chronic medical problems, and there’s a certain process that the wounds have to follow when they heal. A lot of these patients will have the healing process stalled. Our job is to make sure they are able to proceed through the different stages of wound healing to be able to completely heal the wound.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is basically pressurized 100% oxygen. Your blood can only carry a certain amount of oxygen in your red blood cells. The hyperbaric [chamber] is really beneficial because [giving] that much oxygen under pressure, under these very controlled settings, pushes extra oxygen into the plasma of your bloodstream. This helps to carry additional nutrients and oxygen to the wounds that so desperately need it. The oxygen and the increased carrying capacity of the blood help decrease infection rates, improve wound healing, and also help increase neovascularization, which means the development of new blood vessels in those areas.
It has a lot of benefits to different kinds of patients. It’s super advantageous for us to have this at Baptist Health Hardin, right here in our community, and not have to have people drive so far to get the level of care that we’re able to offer here.
