Understand the Importance of Urgent Stroke Treatment in Madisonville, KY HealthTalks Transcript
Robbie Jones, APRN, Neurology:
Stroke is a sudden disruption of blood flow to part of the brain, which deprives the brain of needed oxygen and can cause damage to brain cells. A good pneumonic to remember for symptoms of stroke is BE FAST. Balance. Are you off balance? Are you leaning to one side? Eyes. Are your eyes blurry? Are you seeing double? Face. Are you drooping on one side or the other? [Arms.] Are your arms or legs weak? [Speech.] Is your speech slurred? Are you able to get your words out? Time. Time is crucial with a stroke.
Steven Short, patient:
My wife tells me that I got to the house and I fell somehow, but I don’t know [how]. I got to the house and she took me to the hospital and checked me in. I know that they told me they gave me this medication to dissolve my blood clots, and they told me that getting here quickly was my answer.
Mr. Short came in, he had weakness on his left side and he had some numbness. They gave him TPA, it busted the clot up and the clot moved out. He went to rehab and recovered very well.
Madisonville’s been pretty good to me. This hospital was my lifesaver. I think that just getting here was my secret, it’s getting here quick.
