Repairing a Heart Valve with MitraClip™

View Hide Transcript
♪ [music] ♪

The mitral valve it's like a double door between the
left upper and the left lower chamber of the heart.

Its function is to allow blood to move forward.

For a variety of reasons, this valve
can become dysfunctional and leaky,

especially in elderly population.

Once that happens, the blood instead of going forward
tends to go backward, and once that happens,

the person develops shortness of breath,
pulmonary hypertension, heart failure symptoms.

So MitraClip, the role of this procedure is to be able
to sync this double door together and prevent that

backward flow of blood and allow
it to move forward again.

The recovery process after these procedures is actually
the best part of the procedure because there isn't any.

There's no incisions involved,
there's no stitches involved,

there's no cutting involved.

We go in from large veins or arteries in the leg,
and most of our patients literally would have a

band-aid after the procedure.

They're back to recovery and back to what they
were doing prior to the procedure within 24 hours.

We know that Southern Indiana is home
to a lot of elderly and aging population.

And, in the past, these patients had to travel long
distances to be able to get these procedures.

So we are very excited to be able to offer our patients
all the treatments at their doorsteps so the patients

don't have to travel far.

So it's overall a win-win for our patients,
their families, and the referring cardiologists.
