Success of Sleeve Gastrectomy in Paducah, Kentucky HealthTalks Transcript
Anthony K. Davis, MD, Bariatric Surgery:
Obesity is a disease. This disease is not because patients are eating too much. In fact, they probably aren’t eating enough times in the day. The disease is a disease of storage. So, those individuals who are suffering from that disease are just storing too much.
Stacie Burton, West Paducah, Kentucky:
I had tried diet pills from prescriptions to ordering stuff off on the internet. I would lose and think, oh great, this is successful and then I would usually gain back even more than I had lost. Nothing was working.
Before Stacie’s journey, she presented with the disease of morbid obesity. She went through our educational process, and she and I determined that surgery was an excellent option for her to help reverse this disease. She and I discussed multiple types of surgeries and came to the conclusion of the sleeve gastrectomy. After that process, she had a safe surgical procedure. Every day after that, she’s been dedicated to changing behavior. Her success initially might have come from the surgery, but the longevity that she’s obtained, her success, is truly her behavior and her dedication to her own health. And, we’re here to support her for that.
I can’t tell people enough how much it is truly changed my life. It makes me a little emotional, because it has, it’s really just been a blessing. It’s the best thing I ever could have done for myself.
