Laparoscopic & Robotic Hysterectomies in Lexington, KY HealthTalks Transcript
Tracey Carbajal, MD, OB/GYN:
Laparoscopy was originally invented by gynecologists, and a lot of people don’t know that. These days we’ve gone from having open hysterectomies, with four- to six-week recovery time, to having minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries, as well as having robotic hysterectomies. This really allows us to do more advanced cases that are harder, take a little longer, but the benefit to the patient is faster recovery time and returning to their normal life more quickly.
The best thing about the robot is the instruments will move more like the human hand does, so I can do difficult dissections of fibroids. It’s really beneficial to a patient; patients who would normally have an open procedure. It is rare, actually, to open patients for gynecologic surgery these days.
We’re very fortunate at Baptist [Health Lexington] to have a robot, to have an awesome staff that really takes care of our patients. I had a patient yesterday who came back for her postoperative visit, and she just raved from top to bottom. She felt like she was listened to and she felt like her problem was addressed. She’s had a great outcome and a great experience during her surgery at Baptist, and she was very thankful.
